About

I'm an artist and architect based in Scarborough, Western Australia, originally from Lutruwita (Tasmania).

I work across soft pastel, oil and drawing, with a particular interest in landscape and the human figure. At the centre of my practice is something quite simple: looking closely. I'm interested in what happens when we slow down long enough to notice light, colour, form and the small details we might otherwise pass by.

Place has always been important to my work. Growing up in Tasmania, later living in rural Thailand, and now calling Western Australia home has given me very different landscapes to know and observe. More recently, travels through Scotland and Ireland have found their way into my work, particularly their changing light, weather and sense of atmosphere.

My background in architecture inevitably influences the way I see. It taught me to think about proportion, rhythm, material and space. Painting has asked me to do almost the opposite. To loosen up, trust what I'm seeing and become more comfortable with uncertainty and intuition. I like the tension between the two.

Alongside my studio practice, I work as a Project Director delivering major public infrastructure projects. It might seem a long way from painting, but I increasingly see the connection between the two. Both require curiosity, observation, problem-solving and an ability to understand how individual parts relate to a larger whole.

This interest in observation also extends beyond my own artwork. Through Seeing Differently, I facilitate creative experiences that use drawing as a way of slowing down, paying attention and looking at familiar things in unfamiliar ways. No artistic experience is required! The point isn't to make a good artwork, but to slow down, experience new ways of seeing and explore creative decision making.

I also write short essays on Substack, The Practice of Seeing, exploring art, observation and the things I'm learning through making.

Across all of these parts of my practice, I keep returning to the same idea: we see more when we take the time to observe.
